Whilst
researching in Bucks Family History records office for the origins of
James Conie I have come across many Conies and Coneys who may be linked
and these are the main records that I have found
The main family are based around Marsh Gibbon in the west of the County.
1. John Coney born abt 1766 in Drayton Parslow and married on 5th
November 1787 Mary French( widow of that village and born in abt 1767).
They had six, possibly seven children. Thomas(2), Susannah(1789-99),
Joanna(3), John(4), William(1794-5), possibly Rebecca and Richard(5).
He is mentioned in the 1798 Posse Comitatus as a butcher and he was
buried 17th August 1820.
2. Thomas Coney born 19th August 1788 and married Elizabeth Tombs on
9th March 1825 in Thornborough. They had five children - Caleb(1825-6),
Elizabeth( b. April 1828), William(6),
Joseph ( b April 1835 and prob died 1837) and
Josiah ( b October 1837 and married Elizabeth and alive for 1881
census). In the 1841 census Thomas was a cordwainer living in Marsh
Gibbon. They were still in M.G. in 1851 and in 1861 Thomas lives at The
Swan, Buckingham with his grand-daughter Elizabeth aged 7 and daughter
in law Maria aged 39 and they have an occupation as lacemakers. He was a
labourer and shoemaker. He died 19th August 1870.

George(bap 7th May 1826 and unmarried 1881 census), Hannah(bap 15th
July 1828) and Isaac( bap 26th December 1830 and unmarried 1881
census). All are mentioned in the 1841 census, except Frederick, and
living at Mill House, Marsh Gibbon. There is no mention in the 1851
census but by 1861 John, John jnr, George and Isaac(Jessie) are living
at Farmer House shop, Buckingham with Frederick and his family and a
Robert Coney with wife Susannah and children Sarah, William, Ann and
Ellen. In the 1871 census John jnr, George and Isaac together with Henry
aged 16 are still living iwth Robert at In The Village. He was a
labourer and probably died 8th January 1866 at
Buckingham Union House.
5. Richard Coney born 6th August 1798 and married Susannah Allen of
Bicester on 18th December 1817. They had five children - Mary(b 18th
August 1818), Ann(b 18th August 1820), William(bap 8th December 1821),
Richard(bap 1st July 1825 and believe died in Victoria, Aust) and
Elizabeth(bap25th November 1827). He was a labourer and sometime
publican. In the 1851 census he is noted in Surrey at Gibsons Hill, Norwood but no mention of family!
6. William Coney bap

7. Frederick Coney

13th April 1847. She died 3rd January 1878 aged 54. They had at least
two children - James ( born abt 1852 and married Elizabeth Wright aged
18 on 1st May 1871) and Maria (born abt 1849 and married 30th January
1871 Edward Collins). He is later shown in the1881 census as having
married Sarah ( born 1860 in Blackthorn) and having three other
children from his first marriage - Pheobe( b 1862), Frederick( b 1865)
and Jesse( b 1870). In the 1871 census he lives with Lucy(45-
lacemaker),James 19, Frederick 4 and Jesse 1 - no mention of Pheobe but
other occupants of MG include Ann 20, William 13, Ellen 10,
Hostry(daughter) 7 and John 6mnths who are all the same family.
8. Joseph Coney born June 1823 and married Elizabeth Rawlins 1st
October 1854. Noted as having served one month in Aylesbury Gaol for

Another family in the same area and obviously closely related include
1. Thomas Coney who married Catherine Kimber ( she died 4th September 1814 aged 26) on 19th September 1808. They had two children. Robert
(2) and William( born 24th July 1811 and buried 2nd August 1823). It is
possible that this Thomas is the same as Thomas Coney (no 2 above)
2. Robert Coney
born 17th November 1809. He married Susannah Gilbert( born in Bicester)
on 1st November 1830/31. They had one child Noah born 22nd August 1840
and buried 16th May 1841 all in M. G. In the 1841 census they are living
at Sommers Town, MG. In 1851 they are noted as being in Buckingham. By
1861 Robert is a farmer of 6acres and they are with the rest of the
family in Farmer House Shop. In 1871 they are noted as labourer and wife
at In The Village, Buckingham.
There is considerable evidence on
IGI of earlier families but inevitably some details are confusing.
There seems certainly to have been a John Conye who was born abt 1528 in Outwell, Cambs and who married Alice who
was born in abt 1530 in Newport Pagnell. They settled here and he was
buried 27th March 1590 and she died 1603. There is evidence of one son Robert born abt 1577 and died bef. 1665. He married and had a daughter Anne Conny who was born in NP in abt 1603 and died aft. 1665.
Another son Mathias(Mathye) was born abt 1562 and was buried 20th December 1630 in NP. He appears to have married Mary who
was born abt 1566 in NP in abt 1584. They apparently had a number of
children( whose surname varies from Conye, Coney and Conney) - John ( Oct 1585 - March 1590); Martha (1586 - Nov 1637 buried in Kempton, Beds); Edmond (1587 - Mar 1635 in NP); Robert (1588-1600); Thomas (1589 - late 1650 at St Magnus, London); Mathias (1590 - Dec 1635); William (1591 - 1649); Mary (1592); Peter (1593); Elizabeth (1594 - 1660); Daniel (1594 - 1665); Sara (1595-1603); Samuel (1596); Nicholas (1597 - buried 19th Nov 1652 at Ravenstone); Mansell (1599); Mary (1600); Richard (1601-1640); Sara (1603) and Anne ( born 1604)
There is the following information on some of the sons:
Nicholas was
christened 23rd Oct 1597. He married Anne( 1601-Feb 1642) in abt 1633.
Five children are noted and the surname varies from Conny, Conney and
Conie.

2. Mary Conny born and died in Ravenstone 1636 - 27th March 1657

Matthias married abt 1624 Miss Barnes who was born abt 1594 in NP. Ten childeren are noted:
1. Catherine 1625 - bef 1665. She could have married Mr Rogers in NP abt 1647
2. John 1626 - abt 1650
3. Martha 1627 - 1629
4. Ann 1628-1629
5. Martha 1629 - bef 1665
6. Mathias 1631-
?. He married Winifred in abt 1652 and six children are noted -
Matthias (b. 1653), Thomas (b. 1655), Daniel (b. 1657), John( b. 1658),
Keatterne(b.1661) and Elizabeth( b. 1663). In A2A records he is noted as
gent in deed dated 1652 presumably at time of marriage.
7. Thomas 1632-1634
8. Richard born 1634
9. Elizabeth born 1636
10. Daniel born abt 1638
There
is IGI evidence in Chipping Wycombe of marriage between Mr and Mrs
Conye who were born abt 1561 and 1565 respectively. There are noted
three children - John( b. abt 1587), Richard ( b. abt 1589) and Anne (
b. abt 1591). John married Agnes and four children are noted: Katherine abt 1613, Elizabeth abt 1617, Mary abt 1619 and John.
Later there is William Coney born
abt 1705 in Swanbourne, married Mary and five children are noted - John
1731, Hannah 1737, Simon 1739, Mary 1741 and Human 1743. William
probably died 7th December 1743. There is then evidence of John Coney marrying
Elizabeth Deverell by licence 23rd May 1762. There are a number of
children - Mary 1761, Martha 1763, Elizabeth born and died 1765, William
1767 and Elizabeth in November 1772. John is buried in Swanbourne 25th
January 1786 and an Elizabeth is buried 2nd April 1812 aged 75. An
Elizabeth Coney born in Swanbourne is noted in the Winslow area in the
1841 census aged 65 and living with Hannah, her sister, aged 60! By 1851
they are noted as lacemakers and living in Church St, Winslow.
Other
census information shows Hannah 85 and Ann 55 in 1841 living nr
Buckingham having been born at Preston Bisset. 1851 shows Ann 68 from PB
at Rectory House, Buckingham and another family William 59 from PB with
his wife Dina 52( born in Ludgershall), son John Betts 28, daughter
Dina 21 and Ruth 13 all at Blackgrove, Aylesbury. Finally there is a
William 24 born in Buckingham and lodging at Green End, Aylesbury. Other
records show they also had a daughter Mary Ann baptised 19th Nov 1827 ,
Hannah bap. 31st Jan 1833 and Elizabeth bap 1st Feb 1835
In 1871
Sarah 16 from MG is a maid at Hagshaw, Winslow and Elizabeth 56 an
annuitant from Shenley, Bucks lives with sons Eujane 19 and Mathew 22,
both born Lyme Regis, at Buckingham Rd, Aylesbury.
By 1891 Sarah
now a lacemaker is living with Joseph, her brother in law at Grove
House, Buckingham; Isaac is still in the MG area and thereis mention of
two others - George 20 a bricklayer born in Bierton and living in
Aylesbury and Louisa 45 from Burcombe, Wilts who is a servant at Abney
House, Wycombe.
There are various mentions of Simon Coney. One
who married Sarah and had two children baptised at Congregational
church, Buckingham in March 1813 - Elizabeth( prob born 1800) and Ann
Coaney( born 10th Oct 1809). I am waiting details of Simon bapt 1773,
marriage 1769 and buried 1814. There is also a Simon in the Posse
Comitatus 1798 as a wheelwright at Bourton Hold, Bucks. There is a
John Coaney born 25th Nov 1770 to Simon and Ann at North Marston. Simon
was also married at Addington 21st Nov 1773, there is also evidence of a
bastard son born to Simon and Alice Bricknell in 1773 at Addington!!
possibly also Simon
The evidence for some of this is
contradictory and there are many more names for which there is no
apparent home. All information welcome.
